I am sending you one of the ideas that crossed my mind. I believe that this design incorporates all that you mentioned and gives a unique picture of what your organization is doing. You can see Mt. Rainier, fields, the title and subtitle. Your idea with "m's" sounds really great but I thought it would be too much for one logo.... Another version could include this as well..
